The country of Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe. The borders of Ukraine are defined by the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea on the South, the countries of Moldova and Romania on the Southwest, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland on the West, Belarus on the North, and Russia on the East. The largest city and the capital of Ukraine is Kiev.

The history of Ukraine began with the East Slavs, who occupied the territory somewhere around the 9th century. From this time period through part of the 12th century, the state of Kievan Rus’ was formed, but disintegrated by the end of the 12th century. From that time forward the country was ruled by various empires, invaded by a host of crusaders, and inhabited by numerous civilizations. Today Ukraine continues to grow in its political and humanitarian areas, while continuing to transition into a market economy.
