TURKEY

The country of Turkey, which is also called the Republic of Turkey, is a country which stretches across the European and the Asian continents. In the Western portions of Asia, the territories of Turkey are found in the Anatolian peninsula. The Turkish territory of Thrace, also known as Rumelia, is found in the Balkan portions of Europe. Because the country stretches between two continents, it is officially a transcontinental country. The borders of Turkey are defined by eight different countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Syria, and Iraq. The country also enjoys borders with the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. Separating the Asian and European territories of Turkey is the Turkish Straits and the Sea of Marmara.

Because of its geographical location, Turkey has a cultural blend of Western and Eastern traditions. The strong economic, cultural, and historical influences has gained the Turkish people international attention. With Central Asia on the East, the European Union on the West, the Middle East on the South, and Russia on the North, the country continues to gain strategic significance as well.
