SWITZERLAND

The country of Switzerland, which is officially called the Swiss Confederation, is located in the Western portion of Europe. Its current population is estimated at around 7.6 million people. It is a landlocked country, with tall alpine mountains being its most prominent geographical feature. The country is comprised of 26 different states, which are called cantons. Each state controls its own laws and regulations, however, the ultimate and final decisions reside with the central Swiss federal authorities. Switzerland is known as having a high quality of life and being one of the richest, most prosperous countries of the world.

The borders of Switzerland are defined by the countries of Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, France, and Germany. The country has not been involved in any wars since 1815, primarily due to its politically neutral policies. It is the host of many different national and international organizations, including the Red Cross, whose purpose is to help those in need during disaster or emergency situations.
