ROMANIA

The country of Romania, which is also called Rumania and Roumania, is a Central European territory. Its borders are defined by the country of Bulgaria on the South, Moldova and Ukraine on the Northeast, Serbia and Hungary on the West. The remaining borders are on the Black Sea.

The territory which comprises the modern day Romania has been occupied and claimed by many different nations and groups of people. Throughout the course of history, the Dacian, Roman, Hungarian, and the Ottoman Empires have ruled the country. Other countries which have laid claim to the area have been Transylvania, Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Russia. When the Iron Curtain of communism fell in 1989, Romania proclaimed full independence and began to change its government with various economic and political reforms. Its noteworthy accomplishments gained recognition and membership into the European Union in 2007.
