PORTUGAL

The country of Portugal, which is also known as the Portuguese Republic, is located in Southwestern portion of Europe along the Iberian Peninsula. Of all countries located on the mainland of Europe, Portugal is the furthest West. Its borders are defined by the country of Spain on the East and the North, and the Atlantic Ocean on the South and the West. Along with the mainland of Portugal, Madeira and Azores, which are archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean, are also a part of the territory.

According to ancient historic records, the lands which comprise Portugal today have been settled by various peoples throughout the course of recorded history. In prehistoric times, records indicate that Celtic and Lusitanian societies inhabited the lands. Other cultures have called Portugal home as well, including Romans, Germanics, Suebi, Visigoths, Muslim Moors, Alans, and Christians. Today Portugal is well developed, retains a high quality of life and human development index, and is a member of the United Nations and the European Union.
