The country of Poland, which is also known as the Republic of Poland, is a Central European country. Its borders are defined by Slovakia and the Czech Republic on the South, Germany on the West, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine on the East, and on the North by the Baltic Sea and a Russian enclave, Kaliningrad Oblast.
The establishment and history of Poland as a state began in 966 A.D., according to historical records, under the rule of Mieszko I and after its adoption of Christianity. The country became an official kingdom in the year 1025. From that time until the present the country has experienced numerous border changes, various allegiances, and civil wars. Poland reclaimed its sovereign independence in 1989 after communism was overthrown. Today the country consists of sixteen viovodeships, all of which are united under one state, Poland. The country retains membership in political and international organizations such as OECD, NATO, and the European Union.
