The Netherlands, which is also known as Holland, consists of 12 distinct provinces. Each province has its own unique culture, heritage, and social customs. It is a densely populated country, known for its traditions in wooden shoes, gouda pottery, delftware, cheese, tulips, and windmills. It is also known for its social tolerance.
The Netherlands is a parliamentary democracy and a Constitutional monarchy, who, in recent times, has gained media attention for its liberal policies towards euthanasia, homosexuality, prostitution, and recreational drug use. Its government is ran by a Monarch, who at the present time is Queen Beatrix, and a Prime Minister, who is Jan Peter Balkenende.
The Netherlands is a member of many different international and political organizations. It declared independence in 1581, and was officially recognized as a sovereign nation in 1648. It was accepted into the European Union in 1957.
