MOLDOVA

Moldova, which is also officially known as the Republic of Moldova, is a relatively new country. It recently declared independence from Russia in August of 1991. Since that time, however, the Russian government has permanently placed military troops at strategic points within the country as well as at the borders, much to the dismay of the citizens there.

The government of Moldova is ran through a parliamentary democracy. The head of the state is the president, while the head of the government is the prime minister. Moldova retains membership in numerous international and political organizations including BSEC, CIS, GUAM, OSCE, WTO, and the United Nations. It hopes to be accepted into the European Union in the near future.
