LITHUANIA

Lithuania, which is also known as the Republic of Lithuania, is located in Northern Europe. The country of Latvia is to the North, to the Northwest is the Baltic Sea, to the Southeast is Belarus, and Kaliningrad Oblast, the Russian enclave, and Poland are to the Southwest. The country of Lituania retains membership in the European Union and in NATO.

Lithuania was once the largest European country, as it included parts of Russia and Poland, and the territories of Ukraine and Belarus during the 1300's. In 1569 Lithuania and Poland created a new independent state, which was eventually destroyed in 1795. The majority of the Lithuanian territory was taken over by the Russian Empire. On February 16, 1918, the Act of Independence was signed by Lithuania, which declared independence as a sovereign entity. It was merged with the Soviet Union again in 1944, and regained independence in 1990.
