LATVIA

Latvia is also known as the Republic of Latvia, and is located in the Northern portion of Europe in the Baltic area. Its borders are defined by Estonia to the North, by Lithuania to the South, and to the East by the Russian Federation and Belarus. The Western border is defined by the Baltic Sea. The country of Latvia enjoys a seasonally temperate climate.

The people of Latvia are of Baltic ethnicity, which is similar to the Lithuanians. They speak Latvian in their country. Today, the Lithuanians and the Latvians are the only societies who still speak the Baltic languages.

Today Latvia is comprised of 26 distinct districts, over which a centralized, democratic parliament governs. Riga is the capital of Latvia, and is also the largest city in the country. Latvia became a member in the United Nations in 1991, in NATO in 2004, and in the European Union in 2004.
