Italy, which is officially designated as the Italian Republic, is located in Southern Europe on the Italian Peninsula and on the islands of Sardinia and Sicily. The country is bordered by Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland, and France along its Alpine Northern border. The remainder of the country is bordered by water. Vatican City and San Marino, which are independent states, are also within the Peninsula. An Italian exclave, Campione d'Italia, is located in Switzerland.

Italy has hosted numerous cultures throughout history, as well as retaining credit for the Baroque movement, the Renaissance, and the Catholic Church. Today it is a developed country and a democratic republic. It is a participating member in the European Union, NATO, G8, the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, the World Trade Organization, the European Council, the Union of Western Europe, and the Central European Initiative. Because of these cooperative agreements, Italy is designated as a world power country.
