ICELAND

Iceland, which is officially designated as the Republic of Iceland, is located in the Northern part of Europe. The country is comprised of outlying islets and the main island of Iceland. Of all Nordic countries, Iceland is the least populated. Reykjavik is the largest city in Iceland, and it is also the capital.

Iceland is both geologically and volcanically active, primarily due to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, on which the country is situated. These grand scale activities influence the landscape of Iceland in a number of ways. The central portion of Iceland is one big plateau and is characterized by glaciers, mountains, and sand fields. Many large glacial rivers carve the landscape as they flow towards the sea in the lowlands. Despite the latitudinal and geological influences, Iceland enjoys a moderate, temperate climate which is habitable by nature and mankind.
