Cyprus, which is also known as the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country. It is located in the Eastern portion of the Mediterranean Sea, to the South of Turkey, to the West of the Levant, to the North of Egypt, and the Southeast of Greece. It is a popular country for tourism because of its islander lifestyle and atmosphere, along with its rich historical and cultural heritage.
Cyprus was formerly a part of the British colonies. It gained sovereign independence in 1960, becoming a republic of Commonwealth in 1961. It is a modern, developed country, adopting the euro as its currency on the first day of January, 2008. It became a member in the European Union on the first day of May, 2004.
Cyprus is partitioned into four distinct areas of control. The Republic of Cyprus controls the Southern portion of the island. The Northern area of the island is occupied by Turkish nationals, and refers to itself as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. These two areas are designated according to the Green Line, which is controlled by the United Nations. The United Kingdom retains jurisdiction over two sovereign areas, Dhekelia and Akrotiri.

From a merely 120 thousand web users in 2000, they now have 356,600 web users in the present. It is good to see that the people of Cyprus are becoming more and more involved with the internet and they are now more exposed to the good things the web can bring us. This is a sign that things are changing in Cyprus as the internet usage in the country is below the average in the European Union. Because of this, businesses in Cyprus are also lagging behind in terms of some of their tech skills among others. During a recent survey, only 32% of the Cypriots use the internet while the average in the European Union is 89%. The survey also showed that more men use the internet as compared to the women. Furthermore the survey shows that the internet is mostly being used in the office as compared to those using it at home. Lastly the survey shows that majority of the usage of the internet is confined to ages 16 to 24. Because of the slight lag Cyprus has in terms of being internet savvy, they are not very familiar with internet e commerce. Only a mere 7% of the businesses accept orders thru the internet. But then again, businesses accepting internet orders is relative to the number of people who would order online. A mere 6.7% of web users would buy online, making businesses reluctant to venture into selling online. As Cyprus does not often use the internet for a lot of businesses, some of the most popular websites in Cyprus would show that a lot of them use the internet for recreational purposes.
