Cyprus, which is also known as the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country. It is located in the Eastern portion of the Mediterranean Sea, to the South of Turkey, to the West of the Levant, to the North of Egypt, and the Southeast of Greece. Cyprus was formerly a part of the British colonies. It gained sovereign independence in 1960, becoming a republic of Commonwealth in 1961. It is a modern, developed country, adopting the euro as its currency on the first day of January, 2008. It became a member in the European Union on the first day of May, 2004.
Cyprus is partitioned into four distinct areas of control. The Republic of Cyprus controls the Southern portion of the island. The Northern area of the island is occupied by Turkish nationals, and refers to itself as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. These two areas are designated according to the Green Line, which is controlled by the United Nations. The United Kingdom retains jurisdiction over two sovereign areas, Dhekelia and Akrotiri.
