BULGARIA

Bulgaria, which is officially called the Republic of Bulgaria, is located within the Balkans. Five countries border Bulgaria: the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia on the West, Turkey and Greece on the South, and Romania on the North. The Eastern border of Bulgaria is defined by the Black Sea.

Bulgaria takes great pride in its cultural and ethnical traditions. It retains the alphabet, language, and ethnic name of the First Bulgarian Empire. The Empire originally covered the majority of the Balkan region. When the Second Bulgarian Empire began to decline in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the Ottoman Empire took over for almost five centuries. The Third Bulgarian Empire, or State, came into being in 1878 after the Russo-Turkish War. It became a democratic, free-market society in 1990 after the 1989 Revolutions caused the Communist monopoly to relinquish its power over the country.
